Auf uraltem historischem Boden steht eine der kunstgeschichtlich interessantesten Kirchen Osttirols, die durch Jahrhunderte das Ziel frommer Wallfahrer war und ist.
Das spätgotische Bauwerk mit Spitzbogenfenstern hat seine heutige Gestalt in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts durch Erweiterung einer kleinen frühgotischen Kirche erhalten. Die eindrucksvollen Fresken von der Leidensgeschichte Jesu malte Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts Simon von Taisten, der Hofmaler der Görzer Grafen.
